The Latest from Frank Foer on Scott Thomas Beauchamp:
TNR editor Franklin Foer Saturday issued another statement on the matter of Scott Thomas Beauchamp:
In retrospect, we never should have put Beauchamp in this situation. He was a young soldier in a war zone, an untried writer without journalistic training. We published his accounts of sensitive events while granting him the shield of anonymity–which, in the wrong hands, can become license to exaggerate, if not fabricate.
When I last spoke with Beauchamp in early November, he continued to stand by his stories. Unfortunately, the standards of this magazine require more than that. And, in light of the evidence available to us, after months of intensive re-reporting, we cannot be confident that the events in his pieces occurred in exactly the manner that he described them. Without that essential confidence, we cannot stand by these stories.
That’s all very nice, Frank, but Beauchamp was a liar. TNR published Beauchamp’s sensational lies without checking their veracity. This has been pushed in your face for months, Frank, and you still don’t get it. When you purpose to defame the U.S. military in an attempt to cost them support for their actions, you had better be certain that every jot and tittle of what you published is 100% true. You didn’t do this. Instead, you let the boyfriend of an employee play journalist and you published his reprehensible string of lies.
TNR has no credibility. Frank, you ought to be done in this business. Why not shack up with Beauchamp and co-write the next Hemingway?
