There’s some good stuff on the phantom from the usual suspects:

Patterico seems to accept the AP report that their source exists and in trouble with the law, and he looks in depth at the credibility of the 6 Burning Sunnis tale.

At Hot Air, Allah cries uncle:

“She and we were wrong about Jamil Hussein. Whether we’re wrong about the rest of it, too, we’ll see. Apologies, though, to the HA readers for having led you on a bit of a wild goose chase, however well founded and well intended our suspicions were.”

Like me, Jules Crittendon is skeptical, unwilling to accept the AP’s unsubstantiated word as true:

I’d suggest the jury is still out on this guy. The reliability of the AP’s Baghdad bureau and its stable of local stringers remain in question.

At Confederate Yankee, Bob Owen received the following in e-mail from the U.S. Military (MNF-I PAO):

The validity of the AP story below has not been confirmed at this time.

The “story below” is the “HE EXISTS!” tale. It hadn’t been confirmed

Don’t know. There are a thousands questions I’ll ask again if it is established that this Jamil Hussein has an existence apart from the collective imagination of those who play these silly games.
