Representative Jack Murtha (D-Pennsylvania) has been described by the MSM as “hawkish,” and he has been for a Democrat, but he is a Democrat first. He has show that, and I’ll refer you to a post I put up at RedState last night. The argument is that Murtha is serving now as a tool of his party, which if fine if it works for him, but his statement has to be taken at face value.
More on that in a moment.
How’s the press treating this Murtha thaang? As you’d expect, The MRC’s NewsBusters blog has this covered beautifully, with posts by Noel Sheppard, by Geoffrey Dickens, by David Pierre, another by Noel Sheppard, and by Clay Waters.
Murtha is the ranking Democrat on the House Defense Appropriations Subcommittee. The Pentagon returns his phone calls. He is a “Vietnam combat veteran and a retired Marine Corps colonel with 37 years of service.” He’s well known in defense circles and well respected for his views on defense.
This is why the Democrats gave him that speech to read. If you recall, after the President and the Veep attacked the BushLied™ crowd, the Democrats falsely accused them of questioning their patriotism. So now, if the White House were to attack Murtha by name, the Dems could portray them as attacking the patriotism of a man’s whose patriotism is not questionable.
Jack Murtha, again, is a tool of the BushLied™ crowd. He makes it plain with this line from his speech Thursday:
But the intelligence concerning Iraq was wrong. It is not a world intelligence failure. It is a U.S. intelligence failure and the way that intelligence was misused.
It’s a BushLied™ speech written for Murtha and his reputation.
